Lord Shiva is known as Gangadhara, the 'bearer of the Ganges'. The sacred Ganges River is said to descend from heaven, but it must pass through Shiva's dreadlocks to break its fall. Otherwise the impact of this mighty river would destroy the Earth on contact. This imagery reminds me of the dream of nectar descending from Jesus's crown.
